At this time of year, it always seems to be about predictions. Predictions, predictions, predictions. Instead let’s look at the trends and top five posts on businessmedia.co.uk for 2009. Online reporting tools are great at tracking this – albeit very simple on WordPress. 1. Economist to launch on Amazon’s Kindle 2. New publishing business models… [Read more…]

Today I was at SIPA UK’s (Specialist Information Publishers Association) online publishing and marketing summit. I will write some more posts on the key sessions from the day but it was closed with a pertinent point for publishers; think about starting again, this time from scratch. It was a point made by Louise White and… [Read more…]

I’ve been asked to write a short piece about SIPA’s 3rd online publishing and marketing event on 19th November. However looking around at other online sources, Rory beats me to it, detailing the day really well here. SIPA UK online publishing and marketing summit Novotel London Tower Bridge, London EC3N 2NR Thursday 19th November 0930… [Read more…]

It’s been a long while since I last did a post on here and (if I remember how to type), one theme this week has been speed with Google unveiling its Fast Flip product which enables the accelerated browsing of news stories. I wrote about the performance of websites earlier this year, The need for… [Read more…]

Local media is an area receiving significant attention at the moment. However, my plea; we need to get way from the thinking that revenue from online advertising is enough to create, and sustain local media properties. It’s not. According to PaidContent UK, the Tories have called for ‘ad-funded multimedia local news companies.” Any proposals need… [Read more…]

…. from my last post, Mark Glaser over at MediaShift has written an interesting piece entitled “Personal Branding Becomes a Necessity in Digital Age.” Couldn’t agree more. Note the comments from Matt Cutts.

Rory Brown has written a great post here entitled “so, should we all give up and go home?” which is well worth a read for people in UK media and publishing. Too much negativity is certainly heaped on to the state of traditional media – rather than looking forward. There is so much opportunity now… [Read more…]

Worth a read; an article from Mark Nagurski which looks at Monocle magazine. He asks the question “is Monocle the future of publishing?” I wouldn’t go that far, but its business model is certainly an interesting one. Read it here.

More on the news that Netimperative has closed down after ad revenue dried up. This is from PaidContent UK. In digital marketing, that really only leaves NMA.

Whilst traditional publishers seem intent on locking up content behind paywalls , new publishing revenue models are starting to emerge. In this excellent post (I’m playing catch up), Andrew over at Idiomag looks at the new publishing business model. Whilst the content got me going, it was the comment summary from Trevor which really got… [Read more…]

The following quote is taken from Charles Arthur’s post, David v Goliath in the newsroom, and why we need new wrappers for journalism. I feel the same can be said about business and consumer media publishers: “What the established news organisations in the US really need to have right now is some people on their… [Read more…]

MediaShift is a useful US title worth following for people involved in online business media. Today, Mark Glaser has written a profile piece on the IDG chairmain, Patrick McGovern. Digital now represents 48 per cent of revenue for IDG with the target to grow this to half in 2010. The rest will come from print,… [Read more…]

A lot is being banded around at the moment about newspapers needing to charge for content. This is an old debate and it’s about time we push on. One solution currently in its infancy for B2B publishers, is charging advertisers or merchants for the traffic they send to another website and which results in an… [Read more…]

We were going through some business-to-business (B2B) sites today using Comscore. Reed Business Information tops the list but there are some entries worth noting including Bizwiki.co.uk which is a free directory of businesses which anyone can contribute to and edit. Other ones include ecademy.com which provides on and offline business networking. Again, these two sites… [Read more…]

Recently we were shown a site called stackoverflow.com. It’s a site where programmers can post questions and receive answers from their peers. The content is all generated and moderated by the users and readers. It’s a highly active site and an example of how powerful user engagement can be when targeted at a specific niche.… [Read more…]
